Are You Losing Clients Through Your Worry Habit?

Today, I’m sharing some simple strategies to overcome worry in your business.

Are you a worrier?

I can be.

The main reason I worry is due to overthinking, it just takes worry to a whole new level. We create lots of lovely stories to magnify the initial worry and before you know it, it’s as though the world is going to end.

Just to be clear, I’m talking only about worry here, not anxiety. Anxiety is different to worry in that worry can feel manageable, we know that we are worrying and can have some control over it. Anxiety feels more outside of our control. Often worry is exacerbated by the stories we tell ourselves about a situation. I’m not a counsellor, just sharing my own thoughts on worry.

View Things As A Challenge To Overcome, Rather Than Something To Worry About

Let’s say you’re about to do a guest interview for someone, or you’re going to do a FB live. You can choose to view it as a challenge to overcome and put lots of planning and preparation in place. That way you’ll be as competent as you can possibly be, or you can view it as a foregone conclusion that it will be disastrous and everything will go wrong.

This might result in your mind going blank, maybe you’ll have prepped for all the wrong things and it will be a complete failure. Which one of these stories is going to make you feel more worried?! Planning and preparation will help me, or it’s going to go horribly wrong?

If you’re also into the law of attraction, you’ll know that you need to focus on what you want, or you’ll get those unwanted results too!

Let’s play for a moment….

What’s Worrying You About Being Visible In Your Business Right Now?

Write down one thing that you’re worrying you about being visible in your business right now. If you’re not near pen and paper, just think what it might be.

This worry will more than likely bring up lots of feelings. Maybe you’ll feel that you’re going to be judged. You might feel vulnerable. You might feel disappointed that you’re not as confident as other people etc.

Write down or think about how you’d like to feel instead – make the feelings you want super powerful words.

This will help you to think about how things could be different, opening you up to a place of possibility and it encourages you to make changes.

Words you want to pull out are things like calmer, in control, relaxed, prepared. If they aren’t coming up then just imagine what it would feel like to be calmer, relaxed etc. instead of all of the stressful, sicky feelings that can come up with worry.

Now that you’ve got to a place of how you’d like to feel, let’s come up with a couple of useful strategies to help you shift that worry.

Worry is often about how much control we have, or think we have, over something.

Is It Within Your Circle of Control?

I love using Stephen Covey’s Circles of Control to help things in perspective. If you haven’t come across it, then think of a target, with three circles, a large outer one, a smaller middle circle and then the small circle in the centre:

  • His model shows that in the outer circle are things we can’t control, so they could be things like world hunger, or wanting someone to fall in love with us
  • The middle circle is the circle of influence, so these are things we can influence, but not necessarily control, so it could be things like making suggestions in a team meeting, encouraging people to go to a certain restaurant that you like (we aren’t talking about manipulation here, just about areas that we might be able to influence in some way)
  • The inner circle is the circle of control, so this might be how much we exercise or how we manage our worries

By checking in on these circles you can identify areas that you have no control over, so we might apply to be a guest on someone’s podcast show or for a speaking gig, but you can only influence that outcome by being the best that you can be in the information you send over in your application form, fully prepared etc.

Worrying about the outcome of that podcast application isn’t going to help. If you think you did a bad job of the pitch though you can start to learn more about how to do a really great pitch for your next one, which is something you can control.

A Couple Of Useful Questions

When you think about your worry, a great question I like to ask myself is, ‘What triggered this worry?’

Follow up with, “Is this within your circle of control?”

You can then ask yourself what the benefit of holding onto the worry is. This can seem strange, but sometimes when we don’t want to let go of something it’s because it serves us somehow. Maybe by having the worry, you won’t put yourself out there and be visible, you’re trying to keep yourself safe.

Ultimately, you want to always be thinking about a way of focusing on the solution, rather than going too much into analyzing the worry itself.

Stop Telling Yourself Stories

With our story telling we can lose perspective. This is where reframing can be very useful in helping us to move forward.

The problem is, we’re great at catastrophising things. We create unnecessary dramas where we  over generalise and make assumptions. All this does is move us further into a worry state. By challenging these assumptions you can raise awareness.

You may have experienced this with yourself, where you say, ‘I’m not good at that, which means I’m rubbish at everything for example’.

Challenge this assumption. Does you not being good at one thing mean you’re rubbish at everything? Unlikely! You might not be great at writing social media posts but you might make a mean Spaghetti Bolognese!

So, linking back to my title, of ‘Are you losing clients through your worry habit?’ You could be if you don’t get this in check, because you could be holding yourself back from being visible by being fearful about every move you’re making being the wrong one. You’ll also be putting out a very different energy in everything you do, one that doesn’t invoke confidence in your potential dreamie clients. If you don’t believe in you, then why would others believe in you?

It’s time to sort this worry habit, and it’s just that – a habit. It’s totally within your control. You just need to choose to challenge it and it will become a thing of the past.

To wrap up:

  • View things as a challenge to overcome, rather than something to worry about
  • Check whether the problem is within your circle of control. If not, let it go!
  • Stop telling yourself stories

The Pebble That Made Me Realise I Wasn’t Thinking Big Enough In My Biz (& Was Afraid To Shine)

Just a simple little thought provoking message this week.

I was delivering talks at two very different events last weekend. One was what you’d think of when you think of a speaking gig, a big room full of people, speaker packs, microphones, all that kind of thing. The other was a much smaller, intimate group. Both very different, and both fabulous in their own unique way.

At the second event, a little bag of shells and pebbles that had been collected from the beach was passed around. We were all invited to take something from the bag as a reminder to ourselves of how unique we all are.

I put my hand into the bag and felt quite a large pebble. I went to take it out and then put it back before taking out a smaller shell.

Not that significant really, but the thing is it was.

I thought to myself, ‘what will people think if I take the bigger pebble?’

It got me thinking about how we might want to shine in life/our businesses, but we are afraid to.

What will people think if we take the ‘bigger pebble’ – whatever that bigger pebble might represent.

Will they think we are being egotistical? Pretentious?

Will they think we are too big for our boots?

What about if they think we are greedy, taking the bigger stuff, the bigger opportunities, and leaving the rest for everyone else?

It’s all nonsense! There is enough to go around for everyone.

So if you get the opportunity to pick the bigger pebble, then pick it and be proud of yourself and know that it’s good to step up and own your stuff. I know next time what I’d be choosing!

Your call to action this week:

Think of an opportunity you might be turning down, or not pursuing because you’re playing it small. Then change that around!

Are limiting beliefs holding you back? I know that they have with my clients, and they certainly have with me. The thing is they can be changed SO quickly, yet we just drag them around with us everywhere we go, and they stop us from achieving all we set out to achieve.

We wouldn’t try and climb a mountain with a truck load of baggage (well if I was climbing a mountain, I’d probably need a truck load of baggage, most of it being make-up and books!) I digress. You wouldn’t want to carry that all around with you, yet we drag all of this baggage around with us every single day and then wonder why everything seems such hard work.

We are great at building evidence to reinforce our negative beliefs. “Oh that video went wrong”, so that might become “I’m rubbish at videos”, or “I’ve only got 1 like on my Facebook post”, so that might become “I’m rubbish at writing Facebook posts, everyone else gets loads more likes than me”. When you say it out loud, it’s almost funny, isn’t it?! It’s like the little child that gets overlooked at school and doesn’t get the invite to a party. Let’s not make it a thing. Just because you don’t get 200 likes doesn’t you’re your post is rubbish, it may not have even been seen, which going by the way algorithms work on Facebook, is a much more likely reason! Challenge what you’re saying to yourself.

You’ll often hear people say, they’re not good at something, and then they will share examples of when it’s all gone wrong and how they’re not good at it. It’s time to start finding evidence to the contrary, to notice all of the things you are good at.

I remember when I had just finished my coaching training, and we’d talked about limiting beliefs and how you could get rid of them and I thought it was some magical thing that I had to try and figure out. I turned the release of limiting beliefs into a limiting belief that I couldn’t help my clients clear them! Hilarious!

You have to catch yourself saying these limiting beliefs, or even thinking them, and then start to change them through challenge.

Limiting beliefs are based in fear, we use them to protect ourselves but they don’t serve us. They just stand in our way and stop us from moving forward.

Sometimes all it takes is a quick reframe, other times it’s worth working with a coach or someone to help you recognise what you’re saying.

Let’s challenge a couple of common limiting beliefs now by doing a bit of reframing.

“I don’t deserve it”

  • Is that true?
  • Who says?
  • What needs to happen for you to deserve it?
  • Write up a list of strengths. You are unique, celebrate that

“I can’t do it”

  • Turn this impossibility into possibility – HOW can you do it?
  • Has someone else done it before?
  • What did they have to do to make it happen?
  • How do you know if you haven’t tried?
  • What if you could????

I may have shared this already but I remember having a conversation with a friend a few years ago. She was living in rented accommodation and wanted her own little house. She told me she couldn’t get a mortgage. So I said, ‘How do you know? You haven’t tried!’ She decided to go and find out if she could get a mortgage, and has been living in her beautiful little cottage for many, many years now. All because she changed what she believed, and worked on the how!

Now, simply doing this on its own might not be enough. You might need to do a bit more clearing which is why I am passionate about NLP. When I was at my Practitioner training we had to write a list of limiting beliefs. Despite all of the mindset work I’ve done I still came up with a hefty list. At the end of the training, though, I would say 95% of those had gone. NLP is amazing at helping you release all of the unwanted brain rubbish! The rest I’ve worked on since.

We are like detectives, we get something wrong and then start trying to prove that we are rubbish at something, what is that all about? What if you CHOOSE to be good at something instead, and then find out all the ways you can improve at it. Going forward, gather that evidence instead, it’s much more empowering. That would be way more fun, wouldn’t it?

My work with service-based solopreneurs on being visible in their businesses includes lots of mindset work.

We are great at discounting what we are good at. We often don’t even notice how we’re limiting ourselves.

Social Media

What does it take to be unstoppable in business? It takes the guts to work on your mindset, to clear that old baggage out and build your business from a place of power, rather than being a quivering wreck!

Know this… Absolutely anything is possible for you. Working on your mindset will help you get out of your own way and start to believe that.

Social Media (1)

I read somewhere once that you need 3 things to achieve your goals. Sadly, I can’t find the original source, so if you know then please share with me as I like to credit people’s work.

  • Possibility – turn impossibility into possibility (back to that ‘How’ again)
  • Ability – Believe you have the ability to achieve your goals (Has someone ever done it?  Then why can’t you?)
  • Worthiness – You are worthy (Under what circumstances would you deserve it?)

Your call to action this week: Notice what you’re telling yourself and start to reframe it. If you want more help then get in touch and let’s get these pesky limiting beliefs cleared so that you can start living the life you’re meant to be living. There are lots of different ways to do it, and having done NLP training I now know there is more than one way to skin a cat as they say (as in lots of different ways to solve problems). The first step is awareness.

Change CAN happen in an instant. We think it has to take time. It doesn’t! You can decide today to believe you’re unstoppable and can achieve all you desire. Will you?

Why My Biz Goals Don’t Equal New Shoes

I was being coached this week and we were talking about my big goals for 2017 and how, while they excite me, they almost don’t excite me enough.

As we got talking about the numbers I’d set for myself, I realised that while it’s important to have numbers, what I want isn’t really about how much I have in the bank. Now I’m not saying I want to run a hobby, but I know that if I’m going to be motivated to achieve my big goals I need to know what they lead to, or there isn’t that pull to make me want to go all out for them.

I know that money is going to fund a lot of what I want to be, do and have in life, but it’s not the driver for doing what I do, and that’s pretty fundamental. If you don’t know why you want the money and what it’s for specifically, then how can you get super excited about it? Also, there’s that whole thing about money likes to know where it’s going, so if I don’t know then it’s got no chance!

Sure, you can spend all the time in the world planning and coming up with amazing ideas, but you also need to ‘buy into’ that plan or you’re wasting your time.

What I said was that I’m not doing this biz thing to get fancy shoes with the latest label on, or the most beautiful, high-price tagged clothes. I’m doing this whole business thing to get experiences, and bigger than that – I want to help the homeless. Ultimately, I have big dreams about how I can help and want to use my business to leverage that income so that I can be a philanthropist. I’ve actually got an unspoken (so far) desire to help people in secret too, so they don’t know where the money has come from. How amazing would that be?

It’s okay not to want to be a ‘six-figure coach’ that buys designer shoes, or designer bags, AND it’s okay to be that coach if that’s what you want to. This is about being honest and true to who you are. I get excited about handbags, and like a nicely priced Modalu, so I’m not getting precious about not having the finer things in life. What I’m saying is figure out what you want to earn the money in your business for. Connect wholly with yourself and figure out what lights you up, not what you think others expect of you.

If you’ve been around a while, you know I probably spend more money on books and card-making supplies than I do on clothes. I can’t help it, there’s this whole debate going on in my head of ‘oooh, but I could buy xxx books and xxx lots of gorgeous new crafting supplies’. Do I really need it? (Obviously, when it comes to ‘need’, books are absolute necessity – you get that, right?!

Don’t get sucked in by the numbers, get sucked in by the difference you can make when you get your business running super successfully. If talking about money stories brings up all your money shizzle then work on those blocks.

Think about the difference you can make to the world when you show up 100% authentically you, with just one intention, your bigger purpose.

This is why when I work with clients I ask them what their big ‘why’ is. I want them to connect to their bigger goal, to understand why they are doing what they do. I’ve said in the past my big why is to rid the world of grumpy people! By that, I mean people who are unfulfilled, dissatisfied with life and know that it can be better, and it can – we just need to create it. My bigger goal is to help people who are homeless.

As my coach rightly told me, if you aren’t connected with your purpose and have an honest belief inside about what you’re doing then your attempts will only go so far. You’re not showing up as you.
29So think about how you can connect with yourself – really understand yourself on such a deep level that you know without a shadow of a doubt why you do what you do, who you do your best work with, and how you can help. Know your super powers, that’s what we want you to share. Then when you go out there and share your message, showing up exactly as you are, imperfectly perfect, fabulous things will happen.

Spend some time taking stock of what you’re building. Make sure you’re building the right things in your business, for the right reasons. Be honest with yourself about why you do what you do, and what you hope it will bring to you. Be proud of all of the reasons you want what you want, whether that’s shoes and bags or to help the homeless, or a combination of both. Your dreams aren’t selfish, they’re your dreams, so go all out there and get them. Just make sure they excite you enough to do that.

So if putting a financial figure on your goals isn’t quite hitting the mark with you either, spend time working out what that money will buy you. When you’re manifesting what you want, you’ll actually know what it is instead of all that guesswork, so it’s a win: win.

Have you ever sat there and thought I know what I want to achieve, but I just don’t know if I can, or how I can?

I was in a group the other day and one of the girls posted a question about which camp you fell into – a) or b), where a) was you weren’t feeling confident in what you’re doing and b) you have rock solid confidence in what you’re doing. (I’m heavily summarizing the A’s and B’s here by the way!)

I said I had rock solid confidence now in what I’m doing, but it hasn’t always been like that. I’m not saying I’m perfect, there are days when I say to myself “Woah, what am I doing setting myself such big goals?” And then I remind myself that if you want to achieve big things, you have to set yourself big dreams and goals. Even if you only get halfway there, you’re better off than if you never set them at all.

When I answered that I was in the B camp (I have a rock solid belief in what I do), she asked me what I’d done to achieve that. I thought about it and realised it’s all down to the work I’ve done on myself over the past 2 years.

It all comes down to mindset.

It got me thinking. What are the things you have to do to feel more confident.

  1. Make a decision to believe you’ve got this

You might wake up in the morning thinking you’re never going to pull this whole thing off. It’s normal to doubt yourself from time to time.

It’s what you do after having that thought that counts. You can choose to go into a big funk, and spend the rest of the day moping around, or you can choose to do something about it, and get yourself into a better place.

Remember, what you’re putting out there will come back to you in one form or another, you know – those bad moods that start rubbing off on everyone else – yeah that!

  1. Choose the right mindset

Carol Dweck, ‘one of the world’s leading researchers in the fields of personality, social psychology and developmental psychology’, talks about a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset in her book called Mindset. She explains the difference between them like this…

“Believing that your qualities are carved in stone – The fixed mindset creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over. If you only have a certain amount of intelligence, a certain personality, and a certain moral character, well, then you’d better prove that you have a healthy dose of them. It simply wouldn’t do to look or feel deficient in these most basic characteristics.”

Ever felt like that? That you have to do your absolute best or you won’t look good?! It’s one of those things that comes up a lot when it comes to being visible.

In contrast, she says “the growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Although people may differ in every which way – in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests or temperaments – everyone can change and grow through application and experience.”

How freaking fabulous is that?!

We get to choose! Fixed or growth. Which one are you choosing right now?

Carol said that for 20 years her research has shown that “the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you accomplish the things you value.”

So, in a nutshell a fixed mindset will keep you stuck, there is no room for possibility.

A growth mindset will help you to change and grow, the possibilities are endless.

Okay, so there’s a lot of choice stuff going on here, isn’t there? Exactly, YOU get to choose what you want. You can choose to lack confidence, or you can choose to start working on your mindset and believe anything is possible.

  1. Get Yourself Out Of That Funk

You often read all of this stuff about ‘working on your mindset’, but what does it even mean?! Essentially, in my world anyway, it’s about getting your thoughts in the right place, so that instead of coming from a place of negativity you’re coming from a place of empowerment and I’d even go so far as excitement. Who doesn’t want to feel empowered and excited about life?

But HOW do you get yourself into a better mindset? Here’s a few tried and tested ways that work:

  • Write down all of the things you’re grateful for right now, it’s an instant mood booster.
  • Write down all of your fears and see them for what they are. They are simply thoughts that don’t serve you. Thoughts that hold you back. Thoughts that make you a lesser person than you actually are. You can choose to believe in them, or you can choose to say I might be feeling this way right now, but from now I’m choosing to believe that x, y, z is possible instead.
  • Listen to a positive audio, watch an inspiring YouTube video or read something motivating. My latest thing is afformations, which are similar to affirmations (I didn’t get the name wrong) They originate from Noah St.John and basically are affirmations that are turned into a question, so instead of I am successful in business (which you might find a bit unbelievable if you have evidence to the contrary) you’d change it to ‘Why am I so successful in business?’ It sends your brain on a search for the answer to the question. Powerful stuff.
  • Put on your favourite playlist and let the music lift your spirits
  • Meditate – daily meditation makes SUCH a huge difference to your mindset. Note the word ‘daily’. I laugh as I write this because I set the intention to do meditation every single day last year, and after I set the intention I was the worst I’d ever been at it. It was because I hadn’t really made the decision to do it, but thought I ‘should’ do it. As the year went on it became a daily habit and something I now just wouldn’t want to stop

What works for one doesn’t work for everyone. You’ll have your own ways of boosting your mood so do those things that shake you out of your funk instead. If you find this challenging (I know I used to), write a list of all of the things that help you feel better and then you have your ‘go-to’ for those days when it’s not quite happening.

I love using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) aka Tapping for this, it’s such a quick way to lift your energy and put you in a different place.

Remember, you don’t always need to know the ‘how’. You just need to know that whatever you want is possible, IF you put your mind to it and take action. You can figure the ‘how’ out along the way. Have a loose plan and then you can tweak and adapt as you go.

Here’s a quick recap:

  1. Make a decision to believe you’ve got this
  2. Choose the right mindset
  3. Get Yourself Out Of That Funk

Please do work on that mindset! That’s your call to action this week!

When I first started learning about coaching, I came across an ‘Energy Drainers’ exercise, where you had to write down all the things that were draining your energy, so it might be business related, like a job that you’re procrastinating on, or personal like a dripping tap for example.

What I’ve learned over time is that fear can also drain your energy – BIG time. I’m always banging on about how you should work on your mindset to help you overcome any blocks in being visible, and it’s true.

Mindset is a MASSIVE part of being successful. If you’ve got things that are standing in your way and holding you back then you need to kick them to the kerb.

It sounds so simple but it’s not always that easy. It may be that like me, you’re an introvert, so showing up can sometimes feel like hard work. I can be super visible for a while, working through any fears that show up and then I need to retreat for a bit to recover some of my energy. Perhaps you have imposter syndrome, where you think that you’re not as good as you actually are, and are going to be ‘found out’ one day. You will be, you’ll be found out to be the fabulous business owner that you are!

I’ve been doing lots of research lately with potential ideal clients to find out what really holds them back in business, and the number 1 thing is fear. They are afraid.

Afraid of not being good enough.

Afraid of being ‘found out’ as a fraud (despite being incredible at what they do!)

Afraid of being criticised if they do share content.

Afraid of being compared to others.

Afraid they don’t have enough experience, or enough to say, or the right things to say.

So much fear.

Fear doesn’t have to run the show. You get to choose what you do with it.

Here’s 3 ways that you can bust your fears:

  1. Take action

This is the fastest way to smash through your fears. Brave action ideally, but any action is a step in the right direction. Set an intention of what you’re going to do, declare it to someone else (personally I think this REALLY helps) – when you know someone is going to hold you accountable and take no excuses off you, then it’s way more likely that you’ll take action. Go out there and do it.

In the film, We Bought A Zoo, Matt Damon says to his son, “Sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage, just literally 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery, and I promise you something great will come of it.”

How could you show insane courage for just 20 seconds?

  1. Sit with your fear

I know! I never thought that phrase would come out of my mouth either! I know for me, anything about feelings is a bit uncomfortable. If there’s a way I can logically work out a problem, that would totally be my go-to plan rather than sit and ‘feel’ into it, but actually it’s a great thing to learn how to do. Yes, my lovely mentors, I have been listening!

Feelings are there for a reason, they’re a guide to help us move forward.  What are you really scared of? If you dig deep, you’ll realise it isn’t always what you think.

Instead of stressing about why it’s coming up, or getting yourself tied up in knots like a pretzel, be a witness of your fear. Say to yourself, “Isn’t it interesting that I feel fearful about xxx, I wonder what is it about xxx that’s making me feel fearful.” Notice what comes up when you do this exercise. You could journal the ideas to get even more clarity.

I’m sure you’ll have heard of the acronym of FEAR being used as False Evidence Appearing Real. We might be basing our fears around previous ‘evidence’ of what’s happened, but how do we even know that it will play out in the same way. What if circumstances have changed since the last time? What if we have changed? Start to gather evidence of things that have gone really well when you’ve ‘put yourself out there’, record those things that you’ve conquered over time.

  1. Focus on the here and now

I was talking in my Fearless Visibility Diva group just last week about being in the here and now. I think it was Danielle Laporte that said if we could just focus on the here and now then there is no need for fear because you’re not in the past or the future so there is literally nothing to fear. How can you stay focused in the moment?

Maybe you’re just about to post a message in a group, and your fear is rearing its ugly head, shouting to you that it won’t be good enough, that what you want to say is silly. What if instead of running that story you create a whole new one, where you visualise yourself being successful? Step into the confident version of you that creates amazing posts and is a real inspiration to others.

Don’t let fear stop you in business. Pushing through comfort zones is all part of being a business owner. Find ways to move through fear so that it doesn’t cost you missed opportunities/business.
