Learn 7 ways to get started

I have a relatively small Facebook group. At the time of recording/writing it has less than 600 members, however about 85-90% of my business comes from my group.

It’s a great place to showcase what you do and help people to get to know you better. It’s also a great way to connect on a deeper level with your dreamie clients.

I love to ask the members of my Facebook (hereon in written as FB) group what they’d like to learn. Currently one of the hot topics that seems to be coming up in my group and with clients is where to start with a FB group.

Questions get raised like:

  1. Do they take a lot of time?
  2. How do I get one started?
  3. How do I get people in there?
  4. What do I share in my group?

Let me take each of these in turn and share some simple ways to get started.

  1. Do they take a lot of time?

They can initially take time to get them up and running and then you learn how to manage them more effectively. The key to a group is to create engagement so just showing up now and again isn’t the best strategy. Bombarding the group with content isn’t the way either. It’s about getting a balance.

You don’t want to be in there 24/7 answering questions constantly as you’ll end up burning yourself out, but you do want to get involved when people are taking time to comment and join in.

  1. How do I get a group started?

I won’t share the practicalities here on the techie side, but I will share with you some ideas around getting it started.

Start with the end in mind. You need to have clarity around the purpose of the group.

Here’s some questions to ask yourself:

  • Why do you want to run it? (It may be to get yourself known, to create a safe space for clients, for an online programme that you run or to attract dreamie clients, or all of the above) What’s the main purpose of your group?
  • Who is the group for? (This is where you really need to get clear on who you serve, how you help and what you offer. That way the content you share in the group will be right, and you’re not spending hours trying to come up with ideas only to get crickets when you share something.   • What is your main area of work? (This will help you come up with content creation ideas)

Spend some time getting clarity around these three areas and that will really help you to get started and get the foundations of your group right.

  1. How do I get people in there?

There are SO many ways. The quickest and easiest is to invite them! Add them as PS notes in everything you do, i.e. PS. Here’s 14 places you could be spreading the word to get you started, I was aiming for 7 but got a bit carried away!

  1. Put a link at the bottom of your email
  2. Put a link in your Skype account
  3. Add a link to every blog post that you write/share
  4. Invite people to your group when you’re talking to them
  5. Share a little image on your FB business page showing your group info and invite them to join
  6. Invite them in your newsletter
  7. Talk about your group at local networking meetings
  8. Share your group on promotional days in other online groups
  9. Write a blog post about your group and create a link to join
  10. Write a little post and share it on various social media platforms that you’re on
  11. Add it to the bottom of your opt-in
  12. Do a PS note in any Facebook post that you share
  13. Mention your group at the end of every Facebook Live that you do
  14. Ask people in your group to help you spread the word

Get creative with it. What places could you share about your group?

For this to work well, the clarity piece in step 2 is super important so that you invite the right people into the group, that way they are more likely to be your dreamie clients that you want to work with.

  1. What do I share in my group?

Because you’ve got step 2 right, you’ll now have more of an idea of what content to share that will be useful to your dreamie clients.

Let’s say you’re a Stress Coach, your focus on content will be around managing stress, so it might be to create some little top tip posts of how to manage your stress levels, maybe around relationships, or career or home life for example. You might share blog posts of the same tips, or create a FB live.

One of the things that I’ve done for years in my group is have themed days. A lot of groups are doing this. The purpose is to build familiarity in your group, so it feels like a safe space to share, it creates consistency and it makes it waaaay easier for you because you have set days for set posts.

The funny thing is I’ve often thought about adding in lots of different things into my group, but when I do ‘market research’, aka have a coffee catch up with members from my group, the one thing they tell me they love is the consistency of my themed days! Gotta go with what works!

One of my lovely clients, Dawn Bradly, of Dawn Bradly Coaching works with clients around low-level stress and anxiety and when she had her own group she would create a day where she adds something light-hearted and humourous to create a bit of fun in her group.

Here’s a list of 18 ideas to get you started

  1. Invite them to share their blog post
  2. Monday Motivation day
  3. Inspiration day (share stories to inspire your dreamies)
  4. Let’s connect day where people share their social media posts
  5. Top Tips
  6. Did you know….?
  7. Just for fun
  8. Comment with a gif to say how you feel
  9. Where in the world are you? posts
  10. Celebration posts
  11. Quotes
  12. Longer posts sharing your story (check out this post https://www.rubymcguire.com/how-to-use-storytelling-in-your-business/ for a template on how to write these)
  13. A poll to find out what people want
  14. Share your promotion/offer day
  15. Blog posts that you’ve written
  16. FB Lives – do some training for your group
  17. Q & A thread, a business clinic or ‘clinic’ that fits in around your niche
  18. Case studies

Think this just works for coaches, consultants and trainers? Think again. My hubby now runs his own plumbing and heating business. He doesn’t need a group but we use a similar principle for his business page, and he’s rushed off his feet! Here’s his themed days for the week:

Monday: Mac’s Plumbing Tips
Tuesday: Share a story (a case study of some kind)
Wednesday: Share a poster (this is the poster he shares in groups to advertise his services)
Thursday: Did you know? (this is where he shares something fun related to plumbing and heating
Friday: Just For Fun (these posts are random questions that we ask to create engagement)

It takes a lot of the pressure off you when you have a plan to stick to, and as your business grows it means you can outsource this task too.

So there you have it – a simple guide to help you generate some fun ideas for your FB group.

Facebook groups can take time, which is why it’s so important to know why you want to run them and what you want to get out of them. However, with the right strategy behind them, you can start to generate lots of business through them.

Do you wish you could get potential clients booked into your diary with ease? It can be tough, can’t it? It can all feel like a struggle. You’re doing this business thing to make a difference but it feels like really hard work. Maybe you’ve told yourself this is the year it’s make or break. If it doesn’t work you’re going back to get a proper job and that makes your stomach turn.

You’re tired. Tired of being disappointed, tired of not getting the results for your hard work. I know, I’ve been there! With simple tweaks though, you can create discovery calls with your dreamie clients over and over again. Let me share with you how.

I used to wonder how you magically get people booking into your diary, until I learned what works best in my business. I tested it out with my clients and then a new system was born.

I spent a long time perfecting how to do discovery calls. I would say I’m still not perfect at it. I often give away far too much and cost myself a client!! However, I now convert to paying clients at about an 85% conversion rate, so today I thought I’d share with you what works for me and my clients in getting client calls booked into your diary.

Worst case, is you get to connect with people and that raises your visibility! What can you do in your business to create these gorgeous clients? Here’s some ideas to get your brain fired up!

Free discovery call, consult, etc..

Invite people onto a call to talk about how you might be able to help them. A quick call where you can ask what they are struggling with, make an assessment of how you can help and then share with them ways to work with you

Free taster session – strategy/discovery/relevant to your biz

Similar to the discovery call but this one is more about showcasing what you do. At the end of the call you can ask if they’d like to find out more about how to work with you. You can also do a mini action as part of the call and that will give you more chance to follow up

Client interviews/surveys – 10 questions (FAB for newbies)

A fabulous place to start if you don’t know who your dreamie clients are, or you just want to understand them better. Offer the client interview where you ask about 10-15 questions that will help you understand them better, then offer them a free taster session in return. Again, great for follow-up too as you can check in on their progress after the session.

Hold a webinar – Teach what you know, invite onto call

A great way to both build your list, credibility and opportunity to get discovery calls booked. They like your content, they want to find out more

Share great content

Something that MUST not be overlooked. You have to make sure you have great content. This will underpin what you do, help you to connect with your dreamie client and then make them want to talk to you. You can pop a call to action on your posts, your blog posts etc., but I’d say do this with caution as it’s much more compelling if there is a time limit on your discovery calls

Other people’s groups

Share an invite to chat with you on marketing days. What I would say here is make it more of a taster session for these than a discovery call as you’re more likely to get interest (and remember the group rules – not all groups allow for this)

Group chats/networking

Be brave with conversations. Just chat away in groups, networking and then if you think you can help that person, simply invite them onto a call with you.

Other things that you can try

Invite onto a call – as an add-on to group programmes. It’s a great way to help people that you only know in a group capacity, opportunity to offer them more 1:1 work if it’s relevant

Speaking gigs – make your call to action an invite to talk to you about how you can help them

Referrals / affiliates – invite onto a call as above to talk about how you can help

Email list – set a maximum number of clients you want to work with, invite people that are serious about working with you onto a call. Explain who it’s for and who it isn’t – i.e. It’s not for you if you aren’t ready to invest in working with me, not committed to take action etc.

So there you have it, lots of different ways that you can get people to jump on a call with you.

Remember, no conversation is wasted. That connection can lead into lots of new opportunities, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time. If someone doesn’t sign up with you, there can be lots of reasons why – not the right time, not the right fit for them, they’re not ready yet etc. etc. Who knows where that connection will lead!

How Strategic Are You Being With Your Facebook Groups?

If you want to be visible then Facebook groups are a great place to be.

You get to build relationships in them.

You can do market research by noticing what people need, what they are struggling with

You can make some fabulous friendships.

The problem is that being on social media can completely take over your day. You start at 9am thinking you’ll just spend a few minutes chatting and before you know it, it’s lunchtime and you’ve got nothing done. Fun though the chatting was.

If you want to maximise your time then you need to think more strategically about how you spend your time in groups.

Fact: Time = Money, so you want to make that time really count.

WHERE TO START

Go through your current list of groups and choose 5 that would make it to the top of your list. Here’s some guidelines to help you.

GROUP SIZE

Check the size of the group – Is it the kind of size of group you like to spend time in?

Some people like bigger groups, the opportunity to connect with more people. Others like more intimate groups, the opportunity to connect on a deeper level with people.

TYPE OF POSTS

Are the posts all salesy, or are people getting involved in real conversations. If you’re someone that just wants to promote then a salesy group might work for you (I’d say avoid them like the plague because people won’t notice you and it can become a spam fest over time with no real value, but this isn’t about me, it’s about what works for you)

HOW ACTIVE IS THE GROUP?

If people are asking questions and nobody is replying then is it the right group for you? It might be that you want to give it a go if you think your dreamie clients are in there, maybe you can get some good conversational posts going if that’s what you’re good at. If nobody is chatting though, it could suggest that the group isn’t that active, so would you really want to spend your time in there.

DOES YOUR GROUP SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE?

If you’re spiritual and going into a group that isn’t spiritual then is it going to give you what you need from a group? Will there be potential dreamies in the group for you?

Once you’ve done this mini review you can start to work out your top 5.

WILL YOU LEARN FROM THE GROUP?

You might be joining because you want to learn from people who have a different skill set to you, or who are a bit further ahead than you. It’s not always about searching for clients!

GOT YOUR 5? TIME TO TEST IT

Set some time limits around how long you want to test the group for. Maybe a week, a month, three months? Give yourself some time to really get involved and find out if it’s the right fit for you, in terms of people, content, vibe etc. If it’s not then revisit your list and replace it with another group to test.

ENGAGE

So you’ve done your research and got your top 5. Now it’s time to engage.

Don’t want to go down that rabbit hole? Set yourself a timer. I love using the Pomodoro Technique for this kind of thing. It’s essentially a 25-minute timer and keeps you super focused. In that 25 minutes you could challenge yourself to comment on 3 people’s posts and write one of your own posts.

 

You’ve probably already got lots of old content that you can repurpose. You just need to think creatively as to how to use it. This particular post has been repurposed from a training I wrote for my Rock Your Visibility programme. I’m using a tiny piece of that content and turning it into a blog post. You could do the same principle with content, by turning a blog post into snippets of content, or a video you’ve recorded with tips etc.

Remember, while being on social media can be fun. It can also take you away from what you really need to be doing. Yes, a big part of running your business is about connecting, but it doesn’t mean you don’t need to be strategic about it.

Are You A Lady, Countess, Princess or Queen?

I recently revamped my Visibility Quiz and thought I’d have a bit of fun with it.

Because about 95% of my audience is female I decided to play around with feminine words. Words don’t work, you can just replace the quiz personalities as Lord, Count, Prince & King or whatever creative names you can come up with!

So what’s it all about?

Well really it’s just a bit of fun – there’s no science behind it. I just identified different levels of visibility in business, so based on your level of visibility you’ll either get a score of Lady, Countess, Princess or Queen (or your equivalent) What’s really interesting is how addictive visibility can become when you make a game of it. I’ve had people in groups asking how they can get to the next level, and asking if they can work with someone at a higher level to get tips to improve their  own visibility.

Like anything online there’s all of these hooks to help you take action, there’s leaderboards, and app points and so on, so I thought I’d create something for my dreamie clients to help them take action on their visibility, rather than it being one of those someday jobs. You know the ones.

The thing is there are over 80,000 ways to market and so it’s no wonder we become overwhelmed with the best way to be visible.

Aside from all of the mindset monkey crap that goes on in our heads we have thoughts running through our minds like, ‘Where’s the best place for me to market myself?’, ‘What’s my message?’ ‘Is anybody even going to notice me where it’s such a crowded marketplace?’

The big question I often get asked is this:  ‘What’s the right way to be visible?’

Well there is no ‘right’ way as such, as every business is different. I don’t believe in the whole ‘follow my blueprint and you’ll get overnight success model’. Saying that though, I’ve fallen into the trap of using it in the past. The right way is whatever is right for your dreamie clients. Who are they? Where are they? What do they need to hear from you? How can you show up so that they connect with you quickly? What next steps do you need them to take?

Lots of people associate visibility as just doing videos. I think there are LOADS of ways to be visible, visible to me is about being seen, showing up. That could be by writing blog posts, by being interviewed on podcasts, by connecting one on one with potential dreamie clients. If you’re like me then being an introvert means you find it exhausting just doing video. I like to mix things up a bit, and do you know the good thing about that? You get to tap into everyone else’s unique way of receiving info too. Win:win 🙂

What do the different levels mean?

Lady: You’re at the start of your visibility journey, there’s some work to be done. It may be that you’ve done some of the things like posting some things on social media, getting clear on who your dreamie clients are, and starting to hang out online in the right places.

The fabulous thing about being a Lady is that you get to see really quick progress, there’s some great quick wins that you can put into place 🙂

Countess: You’ve done some of the ground work and you’re starting to get a bit more consistent with your messages. Maybe you’re networking, maybe you’re on a social media platform and showing up regularly. You’re on your way!

Princess: You’re starting to get a bit more strategic with what you do. When you’re here you might be running your own group or writing regular blog posts. You’ve worked out lots of things that help you get in front of the right people, you just need to do more of it / try new things.

Queen: You are rocking your visibility! Go you! There will still be more things you can do to get visible. What will your next step be?

What Stories Are You Telling Yourself?

Running a business can be scary. The trouble is, we can also make it SO much scarier than it needs to be.

We can create ‘stories’ around our business that don’t serve us.

If you want to be successful in business, you want to have stories that empower you, rather than disempower you.

For most business owners, the thought of showing up and being visible can feel really uncomfortable. It can make you feel anxious, and sometimes even physically sick. Your mindset monkeys can get in the way and you might be asking yourselves things like:

  • What if they think my service/ offering isn’t good enough?
  • What if I market my services and nobody wants to work with me?
  • What if people don’t like me?
  • What if they judge me for what I put out there?
  • What if I’m successful?
  • What if I’m a failure?

Let me ask you something different:

  • What if the opposite is true?
  • What if your work is good enough?
  • What if people do like you and do want to work with you?
  • What if you do become a success?

What you’re telling yourself every day is building on your story. Let’s talk about the story you might be creating in your biz right now. Maybe this is what you’re telling yourself:

  • I have to work really hard
  • It’s challenging getting new clients
  • I find technology really challenging
  • Sales conversations are awkward
  • I never have enough time to do all I need to do
  • I take two steps forward and one step back
  • I’m going to have to go back and get a ‘proper’ job

Let’s shine a light on all of this fear, so that you can step into the successful business owner that you want to be.

Here’s a simple exercise for you:

Write down any of the fears that come up for you as you think about your business. These are all becoming your story, and we want to create a much more fabulous story instead!

Once you have a list of your fears, now you can start to do something about them.

I developed an acronym of FEAR, which was inspired by a coach I used to work with. She used, “I see you, I acknowledge you, I release you.”

Here’s what FEAR stands for and how you use the exercise:

F – Feelings – get into the feelings that are coming up for you and write them down
E – Express – read them out loud
A – Acknowledge – that it’s okay to have those feelings, thank them for showing up and choose to view things differently going forward
R – Release – Choose to release them one by one, by focusing on each one and saying “I choose to release you now” as you cross each one off the list

Here’s how it works in practice:

What you’ve written: “I have to work really hard in my business…”

Feeling: Mine is you have to work really hard, that brings up a feeling of anxiety in my tummy, it makes me feel worried that I won’t be able to do the other things that I want to do. (You can write the feeling if you want, or just feel into it – if you can. I often have to ‘think’ into it, but I do know if I really think about the issue it does bring up some kind of sensation/feeling for me)

Express: I have to work really hard to be successful in my business – say this statement out loud

Acknowledge: Say “Thank you for bringing this fear to my attention. I acknowledge you” (your mind is trying to protect you by bringing up this fear), acknowledge that this is how you feel. It’s okay for you to feel that way.

Release: I choose to release you now, cross it off the list. You can even say ‘Rubbish’ or ‘Nonsense’ or whatever word works for you to release any power it has over you. It’s SO freeing! You could even burn or shred the piece of paper, whatever works for you.

Now sometimes the fears don’t come back, but I’ve found that sometimes they are persistent and will still be there which is where we can then dig a bit more. The more you work on your fear, the easier you can clear it.

So, it’s time to let it all go and start creating a new, more empowering story.

Don’t let fear stop you from sharing what you do with the world. You’ve been given gifts and talents that people need you to share!
