Step 7 – Build Your Fabulous Coaching Biz

Welcome to day 7 of my mini 12 step daily series, where I’m going to share my 12 steps to building your fabulous coaching biz.

Step Seven – Discovery Sessions

7

Do you have Discovery Sessions with prospective clients?  (you may call them something else like Strategy Calls, Complimentary Sessions etc.) Some Discovery Sessions are a way to get to know each other, and some where the person is about to make their mind up to work with you and need you to help them understand why they should. The main reason for Discovery Sessions is to find out where the person is, what challenges they are facing and how you can help them.  There is varying opinion but mostly they are not a coaching session but a way to do some fact finding where both parties make a choice whether to take it to the next stage. Bear in mind that it’s your business, you get to choose who you do and don’t work with.  If you don’t want to work with someone you don’t have to.

As with the networking sessions starting conversations and building relationships is a great way to build and grow your business.  Discovery Sessions give you the opportunity for that initial conversation.

An effective way to hold a Discovery Session is to use the Past-Present-Future method (see my Speed Coaching post here). You find out what’s brought them to where they are, what’s going on for them currently and where they want to be.  Then you can start to identify how you can help them.  They aren’t meant to be a hard sell but a way in which you can offer an invitation to them to share how you can work with them if they choose to take the next step.

What will you include in your Discovery Sessions?
