3 Simple Strategies To Get Visible When You’re Super Busy

It’s all well and good planning out whole days in your diary to work on your business, but what if you’re so busy with clients, you just don’t have that much time to hand?

That’s when you need to be super smart with your time.

Sometimes, just taking baby steps is all you can do. The good thing is that baby steps forward are still better than doing nothing, so don’t let limited time stop you from being visible altogether.

Here’s 3 simple strategies to help you get smarter with your time:

  1. Plan In Some Pomodoro Time

I love to use Pomodoros to keep me focused. If you’ve not heard of them it’s a fab little technique by Francesco Cirillo. You basically set a timer for 25 minutes and work until the timer goes off. It’s amazing what you can get done when you put some time pressure on yourself. No more messing about! You can get some great Pomodoro apps. I personally use Be Focused Pro on my iPhone, just search for tomato timers or Pomodoro timers. Failing that, just set a kitchen timer.

In my Rock Your Visibility programme, we use Pomodoros to get stuff done. It’s a great way to clear things off your list.

If you’re shouting at me saying, 25 minutes, if only I had 25 minutes, then just do 5-10 minutes. Even doing a focused task for 5-10 minutes is going to be progress.

In 5-10 minutes you could go into a group and comment on 3 posts, you could share a quote, ask a question on your social media etc. You could send that follow-up email to a potential client you keep saying you’ll send.

Keep a list of possible 5-10 minute jobs, then pull it out when you find yourself with a bit of space in your diary and get some stuff done.

  1. Know where your time goes

Sounds obvious, huh? But how often do we actually stop to think about this?

I have THE worst concept of time. Seriously.I think everything takes waaaaay less than it actually does. Once I learned that I need to at least triple the time things take, I’ve found I’m much better at getting things done in the time available. I would really stress myself out by thinking things should be done, but the reality was they were taking so much longer than I had planned. I now use this simple tripling strategy which really keeps me on track.

There will be places where you know your time goes, keep a track of them. Ideally you want to be focusing on money-making strategies in your business first. I love making images on Canva, but does that bring the money in? Well I could argue with you that it helps me be visible, but if I get honest I know that shouldn’t be the first job on my to-do list.

I used to have a sticker on my laptop saying ‘Action Producing Money’. Listening to the latest webinars, reading blog posts, downloading freebies etc. all have their place, but know how much of your time you’re allocating to them and keep checking in as to how these extras help you to meet your business goals.

Maybe you’re aiming to be visible in groups and find yourself constantly on social media, only to find yourself going down the rabbit hole of chatting all day. Allocate yourself a set amount of time to spend in the group, and then stick to your boundaries so that you get other tasks done.

We also have an odd strategy in our house that really works where we set all of our clocks ten minutes fast.  That way we always have a buffer of ten minutes.  Yes, my poor concept of time rubbed off on my hubby/daughter, but with simple strategies you can make things a lot easier, and so much less stressful!

I love this quote – “The bad news is TIME FLIES, the good news is YOU’RE THE PILOT” – Michael Altshuler. 

  1. Manage distractions from other people 

Do you find yourself dropping everything when a quick query comes up, or an email captures your attention? Stop it!!

I remember a poster I used to have on my HR office door which had little characters rolling on the floor laughing, saying, ‘You want it when?’!  Help other people know that their urgency doesn’t have to be yours!  I have to remind myself of this in the reverse sometimes. I can be a bit lastminute.com so think that everyone has time (It goes back to that tripling time thing again).

Think about some of the demands that come up for you in the day. Maybe you’re checking into your Facebook Messenger every 10 minutes, or checking your email and feel compelled to respond. Could you allocate a bit of time in your diary to deal with requests that come up, so that you’re not just dropping everything instantly? By ‘parking’ the request you can get on with the task in hand and if you drop them a quick note to say you’ll get back to them, they won’t think you’re rude 🙂

Are you immediately responding with a ‘yes’, without thinking things through? Start practicing no.  Think about some different responses you could use:

  • “I’d love to but I’m already committed to ….”
  • “That sounds lovely but I’ve committed myself to some biz time while the house is quiet. Another time?”
  • “It’s really kind of you to think of me. I like to give things my 100% and right now my priority is ‘x’ so I wouldn’t have the time to dedicate to it and give it the full attention it deserves”

Remember, each time you’re saying yes, you’re saying no to time you could use to be visible. 

So, there you have it – 3 simple strategies to get visible when you’re super busy.

  1. Plan In Some Pomodoro Time

One of the things I work on with my 1:1 clients is their money mindset. I’ve spent the past few years working on my own mindset and I know that when it’s good, my business is good. When it’s not, my business can feel tougher.

A couple of weeks ago we were having a conversation with our 17 year old daughter, Natasha, about veterinary bills. Our little dog, Lulu, was supposed to have an operation for removal of a cyst last year and on the day of the op it miraculously disappeared. We’re into the Law of Attraction, so we jokingly said she’s been manifesting it to clear up. The operation would have cost £600, but it ended up being nothing.

Natasha, who is doing her A-Levels in preparation to go to Uni to train as a Vet, said “It seems like a lot of money, but you have to remember that you’re not just paying for the operation. You’re paying for the medication, the time of the operation, the years of studying the vet has undertaken and the Vet’s experience. All of those things have to be factored in.”

Now, that’s my girl! A super healthy money mindset, at the age of 17.

What I see in my business, on a regular basis, and I’ve been guilty of it in the past too, is that we charge for the hour, we feel awkward asking for what our services are worth, because we discount all of the things we’ve learned/experienced/overcome over the years. We charge for that service but don’t think about how much time, money and energy we’ve invested to get the knowledge over the years that will ultimately help our clients.

If we want to be successful in business, this has to change.

Charging for your services by the hour will potentially mean two things, one you get exhausted and two, you will hit a ceiling with your income. Now the beauty of running your own service-based business is that there doesn’t have to be a ceiling. Unless you create it of course.

It’s important to think about what you’re offering and how you can maximize that offering, so that you can deliver great service, without it burning you out in the process.

All sounds great so far, but how do you do that?

Well, you add value. You need to think about how you can package up your expertise.

I talk about several areas a lot in my business, so let’s take one of them – niching, or finding your dreamie clients. I can spend time going through this with my 1:1 clients or I can share a pre-recorded training video and worksheet so they can go through it in their own time. Then we come on the call together, it’s not me hashing over the same content (which let’s be honest can become a bit tedious) AND the bonus is then I can work with my client on delving much deeper to get even more juicy nuggets of clarity.

Here’s a list of ways that you could add value to what you offer:

  • Digital downloads, eBooks, 7 top tips, reports
  • Access to group calls
  • Free extras that are low cost to you, but of great value to your client, i.e. the Accounting video I mentioned
  • Pep talks in between sessions up to a maximum amount of time
  • A free fringe cut
  • Some sample content/templates etc.
  • Useful resources, documents, tools, links, videos
  • Teleclasses, webinars, podcasts you’ve recorded
  • Audio or video responses – if a client asks a question about something you could answer with a recorded response, a bit like my Bit.ly and Pinterest videos where you share the screen to teach them something or it might be a pep talk video a bit like my inner critic style of video
  • Pre-work questionnaires or exercises, i.e. mini workbooks
  • Post- work questionnaires where your client might answer a series of questions to consolidate their coaching and learnings
  • Typed action list that you send after each session
  • Accountability – contacting them between sessions to ensure momentum
  • Constructive feedback between sessions to support them
  • Discounts on other programmes/packages that you offer
  • Access to a library of resources that you’ve built
  • Access to a Facebook group or other community group that might be of support to them
  • Access for a set period of time into a group
  • Email support

As you build your business you will start to create tools/exercises to support your clients – save them so that these can be things that you use in various ways.

When you think about your pricing you need to think about what you want to portray overall – value or premium?  Either is fine, but it needs to be relevant to your ideal clients.  Do not price based on your feelings of self-worth, think about the value you bring, the transformation.

Pricing is as much about confidence as it is about charging for your services.  Start to answer the following questions and turning some of your beliefs around.  If you need to do more work around beliefs then it might be worth buddying up with someone or working with a coach to help boost your confidence in charging at the right price point.  It could be the difference of make or break for your business.

It’s possible that you’re holding onto some old beliefs around pricing that don’t empower you so your call to action this week is to write down the answers to the following 6 questions. Worried you’ll miss them where you’re just listening? Don’t worry, I’ve turned them into a quick cheat sheet for you, and you’ll also get the list of values too so you can refer back to it as and when you need it 🙂

   What’s important to you about your pricing?

   What beliefs do you already have about pricing your services?

   Do these beliefs support and empower you?

   What impact is holding these beliefs having on you?

   Do you want to hold onto them now that you know the impact they’re having?

   What would be a better way to think about these beliefs?
   (If you like affirmations then use one or two to support you in this change)

Start to gather evidence for your new belief. Set up a journal or notebook and note all of the new things that come up to support your new belief.

So don’t listen to me if you don’t want to. Listen to my 17-year-old instead and when you have doubts about your offerings, remember what she says:

They’re not just paying for the services. They’re paying for your time, the added value, the years of studying you’ve undertaken and your overall experience. All of those things have to be factored in.

Just a simple little thought provoking message this week.

I was delivering talks at two very different events last weekend. One was what you’d think of when you think of a speaking gig, a big room full of people, speaker packs, microphones, all that kind of thing. The other was a much smaller, intimate group. Both very different, and both fabulous in their own unique way.

At the second event, a little bag of shells and pebbles that had been collected from the beach was passed around. We were all invited to take something from the bag as a reminder to ourselves of how unique we all are.

I put my hand into the bag and felt quite a large pebble. I went to take it out and then put it back before taking out a smaller shell.

Not that significant really, but the thing is it was.

I thought to myself, ‘what will people think if I take the bigger pebble?’

It got me thinking about how we might want to shine in life/our businesses, but we are afraid to.

What will people think if we take the ‘bigger pebble’ – whatever that bigger pebble might represent.

Will they think we are being egotistical? Pretentious?

Will they think we are too big for our boots?

What about if they think we are greedy, taking the bigger stuff, the bigger opportunities, and leaving the rest for everyone else?

It’s all nonsense! There is enough to go around for everyone.

So if you get the opportunity to pick the bigger pebble, then pick it and be proud of yourself and know that it’s good to step up and own your stuff. I know next time what I’d be choosing!

Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet for the past few weeks. I don’t know about you, but sometimes it can be challenging constantly coming up with new content.

I have all the tips and tricks in the book when it comes to creating content, but I’m also a great believer that you should only share when you have something good to share.

If it’s not happening, then the world won’t end if you don’t share a blog post for a couple of weeks. That’s my view anyway.

Now that’s not saying to use this as an excuse for not creating content at all because that’s not how consistency works when it comes to being visible. I’ve still been visible in other places, just not so much with my podcast/blog.

So, hi. It’s good to be here.

What do I want to share with you today?

I want to talk about three things you need to know about making excuses about being visible in your business.

  1. Don’t wait for the perfect time to be visible, there isn’t one!

Last week I posted a Facebook Live where my fringe was waaaay too long because I was waiting to go to my hairdressers to get it cut. I could have used that as an excuse not to post a video, but I didn’t. I decided it was important to share my message about visibility.

There can be 101 reasons why you ‘can’t be visible’, and by that can’t I mean, the excuses you can make not to be visible. Just get over yourself and share your message. People want to hear from you. So what if you’re not perfect, there is no such thing as perfection. It’s not even about you, it’s about how you can help people.

Takeaway: Do not use perfection as an excuse not to be visible! 

  1. Stop lurking, just be brave and take a small action step

I have a lot of people in my Facebook group, Rock Your Fabulous Biz, and each week I have a Stop Lurking Day where I get people in there to chat, share something, do a video – to basically show up.

Last week I decided to run a pop-up mini visibility challenge, getting people to do a short video answering 4 simple questions. The questions were covering things like what did you do in your first job, to what you’re proud of and then finishing with dreamie clients and why we should work with you. It went down really well.

Some people did FB Lives that had never done them before, some came up with reasons why they couldn’t do it and that’s okay.

Sometimes we genuinely think we can’t do stuff. We tell ourselves we don’t have time, the peace and quiet we need, the kids are up or there’s dinner to cook or XYZ.

We need to challenge our thinking. Are these real reasons, or are they just excuses?

We have to CHOOSE to make the time for this kind of thing.

The feeling you get when you come out the other side having stepped up your visibility is really amazing! It’s empowering and it makes you feel on top of the world.

Takeaway: Choose to be visible, choose for your message to be bigger than your fear.

That’s how you help people and make a bigger difference in the world.

  1. Tell yourself you’re only talking to one person

I was invited to be part of a #hotseat in Entrepreneurs Kaffeklatch group last week. I had a chat with Angie who runs the group and she walked me through the technology side of things so we were ready to go live at the time of the call.

She casually dropped into conversation that we could share the link to the live in a few groups and that she was going to be sharing it with one group that had 5k+ people. My mind went into overdrive for a moment.

Woah, how many? Adding in her group, my biz page, my group that made a potential 6.5k+ audience live – watching us! Do you think I was a teeny bit nervous – hell yeah! But that’s okay, I just decided to forget who may or may not be watching.

(Let’s be honest, the reality was probably about 20 people watching in the end)

So what to do? I focused only on Angie and having a fun conversation with her, and guess what – I didn’t die, the world didn’t end, and it was really great fun.

So next time you find yourself making excuses, remember these three things:

  1. There is no perfect time to get visible, just do it already
  2. Be brave and take a small action step, stop lurking
  3. Tell yourself you’re just talking to one person

Do you feel exposed in your business? (What I learned about fear from a mandala)

Do you feel exposed in your business? In today’s post, I’m sharing what I learned about fear from a mandala. What I learned can help you show up more in your business. No more playing it small (Be warned, this is a longer post than normal)

This past weekend I was a speaker at an event in Brussels.  We’d had a busy day and a beautiful lady called Tanya Arler, Spiritual Teacher and Inspirational Speaker, asked if we’d like to join her in the evening to do a mandala. She said she’d share a little message around what it means.  If you don’t know what a mandala is, it’s basically a circular drawing. In spiritual circles (excuse the pun) it can be a way to get a message about what your soul wants. Now don’t shoot me down in flames if that’s not a great description, it’s just how I like to describe it!

I am really creative, so couldn’t wait. We all sat around a table and were asked to set an intention of one question that we’d like answered.

One Question I Wanted Answered

Mine was “What do I need to do/know to make my business explode so that I can serve thousands of people and help them to be fabulous in their businesses?”

Once we’d set our intention, we were given the task of drawing a circle by tracing around a plate, and then colour it in.

Here’s the finished mandala, what I’m sharing will make more sense when you can see it!

So I did my bit of doodling in the middle. I started off doing a bit of Zentangle*, which is a structured type of pattern, then realised that was going to take forever so I drew some wiggly lines that I then filled in with bits of colour. I added a couple of random stripey shapes and lots of dots. I finally added some yellow ‘flames’ if you like, around the inside of the circle, leaning at an angle around the edge of the circle into the centre. (See the Zentangle image I drew below so you know what I mean when I say Zentangle)

Structure & Free-Flow

The lovely Tanya came around and gave some feedback. She checked my question and said that I had a bit of structure (that Zentangle bit at the beginning)  I’d realised that was a bit too much like hard work and I then went into more free-flowing. If you know me, that’s EXACTLY what I’m like. I’m a Virgo, I like structure, but I want fun so I pull myself out of the super structure to bring more flow. So far, so good. Nothing to fear so far, huh?

Staying Inside My Comfort Zone

We talked about this explosion I wanted in my business, and how it was interesting that I hadn’t gone outside of the circle. I’d also contained my yellow (my explosion if you like) on the inside! What did this mean? Well, it meant that I was super excited about my business, and was exploding but not sharing enough in the outside world. Oh, okay, if you say so. I thought I was, but maybe not then. The dots meant I was in rhythm with life, which I kinda think I am.

So, I had to go back to the picture and add in yet more colour/detail which I did. I sat back and looked at my picture. Good, that was fun, I thought.

And ENORMOUS fear kicked in!

So my next task was to extend the yellow from the spiral in the centre all the way out to the edges of my rays and beyond. Easy, right?

No, not freakin’ easy at all. I literally could not push my yellow pencil past the boundary of the circle to go into my first ray. I felt SO much fear, it was incredible. How can it feel so scary to move a pencil past a pencil line on a piece of paper? This was getting really weird now. I kept taking deep breaths and telling myself, “It’s okay, I can do this, I’ve got this” and then the fear would start to dissipate slightly before going onto the next ray and the next.

WOW! I felt panic and fear in my chest, I could feel myself welling up as I worked my way around the rays. One of the other speakers sitting opposite me, who’s intuitive, said she could feel the fear that was coming up for me.

Now I could understand it if I was doing something really scary, but let’s get it in perspective, this was a yellow pencil and a piece of paper! SO bizarre! What I learned was that the circle was my comfort zone so while I thought I was pushing through my comfort zones, it wasn’t to this degree. It wasn’t to the degree that I need to push through if I want to explode my business and help thousands of people.

“So do you really want to explode your business, even though it’s going to feel this scary?”

Tanya then asked me, “So do you really want to explode your business, even though it’s going to feel this scary?” Yes, I said, I want to help thousands of people. Okay, so I kept going.

Eventually, I got all the way around the circle, you’ll be pleased to know, and I finished my rays. (All with Tanya repeatedly asking me if I really wanted to explode my business) Even writing this now, I can feel the fear rising again about what action I need to take to really get my business visible so I can help thousands. Wow!

All good, I made it and felt better. She then said the spiral didn’t feel like it was big enough, she felt it needed to extend all the way out to the edge of the paper. This bit was about expansion, about constantly uplevelling and growing in order to be of service, not going round in circles but each time going further and further out into and beyond my comfort zone I guess. I could cope with that, it felt progressive which was good.

There will be chaos in your business – it’s okay

Next up, I needed to add colour, I wanted green which is apparently a spiritual colour so that felt good. I added green around the edges of my rays and sat back and looked at it. Tanya and another lady asked what I thought of it. I said I didn’t like it, it annoyed me. Tanya asked why it annoyed me. I replied that it wasn’t pretty, it felt chaotic and messy. I like my pictures to flow and have structure (funny that, based on what I shared earlier!) She said that if I want to explode my business, then I need to accept that there will be times when it’s messy and chaotic and I have to think about how I can bring it back into something more ordered. I might not like how it looks, but that’s okay.

Lastly, I needed to add in something else, so I added some blue dots all the way around the edge, that bit felt exciting somehow and I felt my picture was done. Messy, and ugly, but done! 

So what has all of this got to do with you?

Stop playing small – it’s time to show up like you mean it!

Well, I learned that it doesn’t serve people by you playing small, that while you might be pushing through your comfort zones there’s a limit and that perceived limit may be stopping you from helping thousands of people.

I learned that business might get messy, and let’s be honest, that’s the reality of being in business, it can feel chaotic at times. I also learned that it’s okay if you need to take a step back, it’s not all about pushing forward all the time. My biggest lesson was that while I thought I was being brave, I actually haven’t even touched the surface of how brave I need to be to help more people. Are you ready to be that brave? That’s really scary for me to be honest. I’m an introvert. I’m okay with stepping up but then I need a bit of a lie-down. Deep breathing might become the new go-to tool for getting through it.

I remember when I was single after going through my divorce, people would try and match-make me with guys that weren’t quite right and I said then, as I say now in my business, “I won’t settle, I know what I want and I’m prepared to wait for that and do what it takes to get the perfect person for me.” I am now going to take that into my business too, no settling, it’s time for us to step up even more as leaders and to grow our tribes so that we can have an even bigger impact.

When I first started out with my business I called it Life in Colour. That was my strapline.

Colour is a very significant thing to me. I LOVE colour and how it can make you feel and how it can match and reflect your mood. My branding is a good example of being colourful.

So it probably comes as no surprise that I wanted to get a colour analysis done. For those that don’t know, this is where you work with someone to help you identify the best colour clothes for you to wear. It’s a scientific method, which appeals to me as I don’t want to just guess, I want to know for sure.

I had my colours done last week, I couldn’t wait to be honest. I can remember wanting to get them done in my twenties, and then forgot all about it. I had a personal shopper work with me when I was in HR, which didn’t go so well to be honest, but other than that I’ve been on my own, and truthfully that’s not a good idea. I can tell you about business, but putting together clothes – one of my pet hates! I’m not a typical girl that loves clothes shopping! In fact, I hate it!

The session was fab. I felt completely pampered – thank you Lara Lauder. First up is an analysis of your skin tone, that way you are going to be matched to the right colours, and not look really pale or sick etc. when you want to be looking really vibrant!  Then came different coloured cloths being draped over my shoulders, to find out which ones worked and which ones didn’t. When the colour was a WOW colour my whole face lit up. It was really fascinating. Then some make up and I felt a million dollars.

It was the longest time I’d taken out for myself in ages. Don’t get me wrong, my hubby’s always nagging me to look after me, but I have this little workaholic brain that wants to do ‘just one more little job’ and then before you know it the day is gone!

I found out I’m a Dark Blue Autumn, which might mean loads or nothing to you. Think autumnal colours, browns, rusts, limes and then rich tones like turquoise, teal, dark purple and navy and you’re there.

After the session, my homework was to go through my wardrobe to find what colours I already had.

Turquoise top, check. Lime, check. Chocolate brown, okay well I have a pair of shoes, does that count? Coats – black, dresses – black, shoes – black, tops – black, skirts – black, trousers – black, black, cardis – black. Oh dear, not good! I’m a Visibility Diva and I’ve been hiding away – in black!

Let’s just say there’s a lot of work to be done. I’ve got my Style Analysis coming next, so I’m holding off for a bit until then and I’m also working on losing weight, so it will be a project to work on, a work in progress as I slowly change over my wardrobe. I’m hoping once I know my style and my colour that clothes shopping will be much easier. If not, I’m sticking to books!

What it’s made me realise is that if you are the face of your business, you want to look your best at all times, and if black makes me look less than my best why would I opt for it? I’m on camera all the time. I probably look as if I have no clothes, where I always wear black!

This is about showing up as the fabulous, best version of you that you can be, whether that’s by having your colours done, or not toning down who you are as a person. Why would you not want to show up at your absolute best?

We all know that people can make quick judgements about us, and we do too, whether that’s consciously or subconsciously.

One of the big limiting beliefs that comes up a lot around visibility is that people will be judging you and what you put out there. While part of that might be true, let’s be honest you’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, so get peace around that now and know that you’re the perfect fit for your dreamie clients.

So give it your best shot, make your first impression the right one, and that might just be a simple change of colour.

I’ve been stuck in a rut of black, so I am working my way through shedding that part of my identity that came with me feeling unsure of my appearance, and introducing more fabulousness and colour into my wardrobe.

You just might get me in different colours going forward. For this girl, brown is the new black, don’t you know?!
